A Jacksonville man died over the weekend when his ultralight plane went down on a grass airstrip he owned in Bradford County.
Michael Allen Schultz, 53, of Jacksonville, was found dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Bradford County Sheriff's Office.
The Medical Examiner's Office in Gainesville and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash with the sheriff's office to determine when the accident happened, why the plane went down and the exact cause of Schultz's death.
Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Brad Smith said Schultz left his Jacksonville home between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday to go to the airstrip at 9184 NW County Road 225 in rural Bradford County.
Schultz's wife, Susan Schultz, told investigators he planned to spend Saturday and Sunday flying.
Susan Schultz said she began to worry when her husband had not returned home by 9 p.m. Sunday, so she drove to the airstrip. She found him amid the wreckage of the ultralight near one end of the runway.
In a prepared statement to the media, Susan Schultz said her husband “died in a tragic accident while flying his experimental aircraft ‘Trike' on his property in Bradford County.”
